Family Description

We live in Portland, Oregon near several parks, recreation areas while enjoying the benefits of city life. We enjoy spending time at the coast, hiking, playing games and exploring new restaurants.

Preference Description

We are looking to adopt a child or sibling group of two between the ages of infancy and 10 years old, of any ethnic background. We are willing to accept mild medical conditions and/or a child with mild treatable special needs.

The Burch Family Profile

We feel a single child or a sibling group of 2 children 10 years of age or younger would fit well in our household. We are open to different ethnicities and feel it is important for a child to know their culture and ethnic background. We hope to instill a sense of pride in our child and celebrate their individual differences and interests. If our child has previous connections, friendships or family relationships, we plan to honor appropriate connections when it is in their best interest.

Introduction

We enjoy cooking, eating family meals together, and talking about our day's activities. We enjoy family nights in, watching movies and shows, and having individual time. Making time for hiking, visiting family and friends, and even doing household chores is important to us.

Home and Community

We live in the South Tabor neighborhood of Portland, Oregon which is adjacent to Mt. Tabor park - a great area for hiking, enjoying nature, and different activities put on by Portland Parks and Recreation. Our house is two levels with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a fenced in yard, and is within walking distance between two elementary schools and one high school with playgrounds and plenty of open spaces.

Parenting Experience

We have been a part of our multi-racial niece and nephew's lives since they were infants through family gatherings, functions, baby siting, and sporting events. We stay close with other extended family and friends' children, spending time with them and involving ourselves with their children's activities. We have looked after their children throughout the years. Additionally, we have received guidance from neighbors who work for DHS in Arizona, read books, articles, and listened to podcasts on adopting children. Our focus has been on subjects related to raising children with trauma related conditions and challenges foster care children face. We plan to continue this education even after our adoption is finalized.

Support

We have an extensive network of family and friends who support our future parenting. Our supporters have offered to help look after our child, support our parenting, and help us in navigating this road. Both our sisters are well versed in foster care and adoption. Susan and Jared (Darren's sister and brother in law) have two adopted multi-racial children and their advice, guidance and help will be instrumental to us. My sister has been a volunteer in Oregon Foster kids camps for years and has continued to volunteer her time mentoring foster children - bringing extensive experience to share with our family. We plan to become more involved in our Bridgetown Church community as we prepare to bring a child into our family. Faith and establishing a good, moral community for our child is important to us.

Motivation to Adopt

We have been committed to growing our family for many years and have always known, and personally experienced, how much of a blessing adoption can be. With guidance, training, and commitment, challenges will not be faced alone. We have loved ones who are willing to support us on this journey. We are committed to creating a loving, caring, fun, and safe home for our child/children to develop, grow, and flourish and we can't wait to meet them.
