The Sisk Family Profile

We would like to adopt a child or children between infant and age 18. We feel we can accommodate a sibling group of up to 4 kids. We have absolutely no preference with race/ethnicity and are open to children with any special/medical needs and mild to moderate emotional/behavioral needs. We feel that we do a great job of honoring our children for exactly who they are. We cherish the things that make them unique. With all of our kids, that has meant a continuing relationship with the important people in their lives...including parents, extended family members and former foster parents. While level of contact in those relationships vary, it is something we believe is extremely important for our kiddos.

Introduction

Our names are Emily and Gregory Sisk. We are both 36 years old. We were high school sweethearts and have been married for nearly 18 years. We have 7 beautiful children whom have joined our family through foster care adoption. Our oldest son, Andrew is now an adult. At 18, he is a proud United States Marine. Our children at home are Jack (14), Ethan (9), Alex (8), Jessica (6), Penelope (5) and William (4). Our children are of caucasian and hispanic ethnicity. I am a stay-at-home Mom and Gregory works full-time for Oregon Health and Science University as a Operations Coordinator. As a family, we love spending time together. We take frequent road trips to local destinations and love being out with our kiddos. Living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we absolutely love spending our free time in nature. We frequent the beach, mountains and local hiking areas. We love to travel and while we don't do it as much as we would like to, we love planning our next adventure. We love spending time with our family and close friends. We often have BBQ's in the summer and like spending time in our garden. We love visiting the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the zoo, Oregon Garden, the children's museum and enjoying all of the amazing festivals throughout the year in Oregon.

Home and Community

We live in the beautiful state of Oregon. Our home is located in the capitol city of Salem. We live in an beautiful area called West Salem and we are just minutes from downtown & the capitol, half an hour to hiking at beautiful Silver Falls and just an hour to the stunning Oregon beaches. West Salem is a close knit community. Many people here have been here their entire lives and we can totally understand why. Our kids absolutely love their schools and our neighbors are all so welcoming. They absolutely adore our children and spoil us all with cookies, coffee cake & other goodies at Christmas time. We literally hit the neighborhood jackpot! Our home has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We are considering converting our garage into a master suite and should we be matched to a larger sibling group, we would begin that renovation immediately. Our 4 year old son, William, uses a wheelchair and our home is accessible. We love spending time in our yard and the kids love to help garden. Our bouncy house, bikes, scooters and outdoor games are all big hits during the warmer months. We recently installed several play structures in our backyard as well.

Parenting Experience

Gregory and I have been foster parents for the last 9.5 years. During that time, we have parented nearly 50 kids. It's been such an incredible experience! We have had kiddos from birth to 18 years of age. We've taken the foundations training classes for foster care three times and have taken more than 250 hours of training in addition...primarily focused on the care of attachment issues, drug affected infants & children, the care of special needs children, and behavioral issues in children in the foster care system. We have considerable experience with children with special needs. Including non-accidental trauma, brain injuries & drug exposure. During our experience with fostering, we have had as many as 10 kids placed with us. While it is definitely busy with 10 kids, all of the kids continued to thrive. We are excellent with managing appointments, extra curricular activities and family time. Gregory and I have talked about having a huge family since we were teenagers and we love every crazy & fun minute with our kids. This is our calling and what we were meant to do. Our 4 year old son, William, has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and several other medical diagnoses. With the help of his incredible team at Doernbecher Children Hospital in Portland and our little guy having endless determination, he is now medically stable and is thriving beyond anything we could have ever imagined!

Support

We have a wonderful network of friends and family members who have supported us through our foster and adoption journey. My mom lives 15 miles away and is happy to help whenever we need an extra set of hands. Gregory's parents live about 70 miles away but are also frequently available should we need a hand with appointments. All of our family has accepted every child we've had in our home as a member of our family. We feel incredibly blessed to have such amazing people in our lives! We have several friends who have adopted their foster children as well...which offers a really cool connection for our kids and their friends. Over the years, we have utilized therapies such as OT/PT/speech/feeding clinics from several local hospitals including OHSU's CDRC and Providence's Neurodevelopmental Center for Children. Both are just an hour from our home and we have a great standing relationship with the therapists and specialists at both facilities. We have worked with physicians in several specialties and feel more than comfortable asking for advice, referrals, etc We have also worked with Early Intervention and have utilized both in home services and their early childhood special education classroom.

Motivation to Adopt

We are so excited to be on the journey to adopting again. I truly that believe before our last adoption...we thought we knew everything there was to know about adopting. And of course, we were totally wrong! Adopting children that we had not fostered before presented challenges that we simply did not know existed. We have utilized supports to learn the skills we did not already have and we are so blessed to be where we are today. All of our children are absolutely incredible human beings. Not a day goes by that we are not just completely blown away by their resilience, compassion and kindness. We believe that Adoption is a beautiful thing. Beautiful, traumatic, exciting, and absolutely terrifying all rolled into one. We try to meet our kids exactly where they are and build from there. We want to adopt again because every single person in our family agrees that we are still missing a piece or pieces. Our family is large, fun, loving and goofy beyond words. We look forward to what the future will bring!!
