Family Description

Hello! We are Solyssa and Mike; we live in beautiful Bend, Oregon. We have a 5 year old son named Zander. Mike is from Boise Idaho and his family is of Basque heritage (oddly enough, the Basque language isn't listed amongst the many language choices here). Solyssa is from Washington state. We met about 10 years ago when we moved separately to Bend for jobs. Solyssa works part-time as an oncology nurse at the hospital and Mike works in wildland fire. Our family isn't complete without 'Ami', who is Solyssa's mom, who lives close and is very involved with our lives. Depending on what happens with adoption, we have discussed Solyssa not working for at least a couple of years to make sure children have plenty of support in our home. We love our home which is in town and close to everything but somewhat of an 'urban farm' with a greenhouse and we lots of fruits, vegetables and flowers. We enjoy spending time in our yard, eating meals on the deck, riding bikes around the neighborhood and going to the park across the street. We currently have chickens and a dog named Lola. Family time and spending quality, relaxed time together is always a priority for us. We love the outdoors and go camping and on other adventures. We also love to travel, both in the US and internationally; something we hope to continue after adoption. We became interested in foster care several years ago after hearing numerous stories in the news about the shortage of foster families. We also wanted more children in our family. The more we learn, the more passionate we have become about growing our family through adoption. We are currently also certified to foster.

Preference Description

We are looking to adopt 1-3 children up to age 12, either gender. We are willing to accept minor or medically correctable conditions, a child with special needs, attachment, learning, or developmental delays but with no serious permanent disability.

The Visalli-Aizpitarte Family Profile

We are interested in adopting a single child or a sibling group (2-3) and are considering ages infant to 10. We are willing to accept minor or medically correctable conditions, a child with special needs, attachment, learning, or developmental delays but with no serious permanent disability. We think a child's origin, including their birth parents, extended family, and ancestral connections are extremely important. We are open and encouraging to connection with birth family as long as it remains to the benefit of the child. We would also embrace learning and exploring, as a family, about their birth culture. This might include traveling locally to visit people or certain destinations/events and doing our own reading and exploration.

Mike works in wildland fire and Solyssa works part time as an oncology nurse (20hours/week). Our son Zander is currently not in school but will start Kindergarten in Sept 2019. Some days Zander is home with Solyssa and on her work days, he spends the day with grandma Suzanne, who he has a great connection with. We do lots of activities around town on our days off including going to the pool, library, playing at a park, going to the High Desert Museum or out for lunch. Weekends are usually either spent around home doing projects, maybe working in the garden, or heading out of town for camping or a day trip.We love our home and enjoy spending time here, especially in the summer in the garden. We do a lot of local outdoor activities including hiking and biking; we also like to go camping which can include some fishing and boating and we often do these adventures with friends with kids. Solyssa likes to read and knit when she has free time and goes for a run some mornings. Mike likes to read also, usually current events and news, and tinker in the garage. He also likes to learn about space and gets the telescope out so we can see the moon and planets. Zander likes to play with legos, he loves technology and STEM-type activities. He also loves to ride his bike and go to our local park.

Home and Community

We live in Bend, Oregon, in a suburban single family home with a large fenced yard. Bend is a thriving community of 87,000 people in a high desert climate. We are surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers and there are endless outdoor activities. There is a nice park across the street from our house with a playground, soccer field and basketball court. Bend has a myriad of opportunities for youth including a great parks department, many playgrounds, numerous trails, most any sport from soccer to skiing, music and theater. We have an excellent library system that we frequent regularly. We have a highly rated school system and we are within a mile of an elementary and middle school.

Parenting Experience

We are the parents of one 5yo boy. He has been our greatest teacher in becoming better parents. Mike worked at a summer camp in college and he has worked as a sports coach and taught snowboarding to youth. Solyssa worked at a domestic violence shelter during college and received training related to children, and also spent time with children that were staying at the shelter. We both took the Orientation and Foundations Training through DHS, this was 26 hours of training.

Our closest relative is Suzanne, Solyssa's mother, who lives locally and is very involved in our lives. She takes care of our son and would also care for any adoptive children during some hours of the week. We have other family members in Washington, Idaho and California who we see periodically and who are all supportive. We have no concerns about their love and inclusion of any adoptive children. We have a network of friends who also have children that we spend time with. They provide friendship and support to Mike and Solyssa, and friendship and community for the kids. The community of Bend has many resources available to children in foster care that have high needs. These resources include Deschutes County Behavioral Health services which provides mental health counseling, WRAP services, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities services. The community also offers Intercept intensive in-home therapy services, HOPE Academy, which is a mental health day treatment school setting, the Family Resource Center for parenting classes, early intervention services, and many more.

Motivation to Adopt

We feel we have space in our lives, including our physical home, our financial picture, and our hearts to welcome and embrace another child or a sibling pair. We are committed to providing safety, security and consistency within the home and family, providing healthy role models as parents and as a couple, advocating and facilitating support services to help a child process and heal from trauma, and actively supporting a child's growth and development and exploration of their identity within our family and community.
