Family Description

We are a married couple new to the Eugene area for the past two years. We have been married for two years and have been together for seven. Aaron has three adult children from a previous marriage; Mary has been married before and does not have biological children. Aaron's children are 26, 24, and 21 years of age. Karen, the 26 year old, is living in Seattle. Josiah, the 24 year old, lives in Arizona and is looking to move up to Eugene in the next year. Seth is 21 and about to start his third year in college in Arizona. The children's mother currently lives in Arizona. The three of us have a positive co-parenting relationship. We value parenting and have taken our niece and nephew for the summer in years past to help Mary’s sister, who up until recently has been a single parent. To support our new forever family, our niece and nephew will stay with other family this year. We have extended family in the Seattle area and in Southern California. We enjoy homesteading and have two cats, four ducks, and four chickens. We want to choose a dog with a newly adopted child. We have recently purchased a home and will be moving onto a third of an acre with a lovely garden close in town.

Preference Description

Aaron is open to adopting a deaf child and is fluent in ASL. Mary knows fingerspelling and is open to learning/using ASL. We are aware of the importance of identity development, the impact of trauma on attachment, and are excited to share our love.

The Hendrickson Family Profile

We would like to adopt a child who is less than 10 years old. We would like to adopt either a boy or a girl. We feel we can accommodate a single child. We prefer to adopt a child of Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, Pacific islander, Biracial or Mixed ethnic background. We are open to children with many, many special needs. In general, Aaron is open to adopting a deaf child and is fluent in ASL. Mary knows fingerspelling and is open to learning/using ASL. We are aware of the importance of identity development, the impact of trauma on attachment, and are excited to share our love.

Introduction

Our names are Mary and Aaron Hendrickson. Mary is currently 39 years old. Aaron is currently 48 years old. We do not yet have any children together, Aaron has three adult children from a previous marriage. Mary works full-time for Eugene Therapy as a Mental Health Therapist and has a flexible work schedule. Aaron works full-time for Digital Realty as a Data Center Engineer and has a flexible work schedule. Outside of work, we enjoy gardening, doing homesteading activities, watching football or basketball, and camping locally. Mary cooks most meals from scratch.

Home and Community

We live in the State of Oregon. We live in a Suburban neighborhood. We have two cats five ducks, and four chickens on a third of an acre.

Building Relationship is Important

We have completed the Foundations Training through DHS. We are familiar with TBRI and have used IDEAL concepts with our niece and nephew as they managed grief issues.

It Takes A Village...

We are mindful to support each other. Aaron receives support from his close friends and from the group meetings he attends. Mary has support in her two best friends who both want to be surrogate aunts to our little one: Sky in San Francisco, who has three young children of her own, and Mauria, who is looking to start her family as well and will be moving to Eugene in the next year to do so. Josiah, Aaron's eldest son, is coming to live in Eugene in July and is looking forward to being part of his adopted sibling's life. Mary has a lot of family based out of CA. Every year we spend Christmas with them, along with summer get-togethers!

Support

We are fully committed and want to take time to get to know our child and allow them the space to slowly build an attachment to both of us. We have the patience and awareness to hold space for our adopted child's processes and understand that as age appropriate, it would be beneficial to keep our child connected to their heritage and biological family members. We will pay attention to socio-emotional, physical, and mental health development, especially as it pertains to their trauma history. And lots of play!
