Family Description

Dean and Jerry have been together more than six years. Their relationship is strong and based upon a mutual respect and trust. They have a very strong faith that guides them and provides them with comfort when things are difficult. These men lead a healthy lifestyle by trying to eat healthy foods and getting plenty of exercise. They are active in their community and love the friendly, slow pace living in West Salem offers them. They moved to Oregon from Chicago last year because they were frustrated with the fast pace and crime of the city. They did not want to raise their child in that atmosphere. Dean and Jerry are well-prepared to take on the parenting role. They take this responsibility very seriously and waited until they were financially and emotionally ready to begin the adoption process. This couple understands that adopting an older child will be difficult at times. Dean's sister has been a foster parent and is now an adoptive parent. They say they have seen the difficulties and the joys she has faced throughout the process and have learned a lot from her experiences. This couple wants to adopt an older boy between the ages of ten and seventeen. They have significant compassion for children who are approaching puberty without a family to offer guidance and love along the way. Because this is a gay couple, a child who is gay or is struggling to find his own identity would be a good match. Jerry and Dean are easy-going, creative and enjoy learning, so a youth with similar traits would likely thrive in this environment. They would love their child to have a passion for books because they both do. That is definitely not a prerequisite though. Dean and Jerry are open to some mild medical problems such as allergies or asthma. They don't feel prepared to parent a child with significant behavior problems or delinquency, but are open to mild to moderate behavioral or emotional challenges. They feel they can support a child from any race or ethnicity. This family understands children have important relationships and are open to maintaining contact with biological family members when it is safe to do so. Jerry and Dean are a mature, easy-going couple who are quite stable and settled in all aspects of their lives. They are financially strong, even though they live moderately. Their home is small, but well-kept and offers plenty of room for a child. This couple's inner strength, determination, and strong value system will serve them well in their role as parents. They are motivated to adopt because they have compassion for young people who are at risk of never finding the stability and love a family can provide. Both Dean and Jerry struggled with identity issues when they were younger, and they will use their own experiences to help their child accept and appreciate who he is as a person.

Preference Description

We hope to adopt a Caucasian male between the ages of 10 and 21. We are comfortable working with someone who has a treatable physical or behavioral condition. An average to above average student with no pet allergies would be ideal.
