Family Description

Birna is originally from Cuba, where she lived most of her life. She came to America on 10/21/2002. Todd is originally from Atlanta, GA and has a biological daughter who is a sophomore in college and visits regularly. Birna doesn’t have any biological children. We got married on 03/27/2010 in a little town north of GA. Our marriage has been blessed with many things, but we have not been blessed with any children of our own. We try to spend as much time as we can together. Todd is currently employed at Control Southern, Inc. His job title is Solutions Architect; his company sells computer systems and engineering services to industrial customers who manufacture products (e.g. Paper Mills, Chemical plants and Pharmaceutical plants). Todd is a very outdoorsy person; he loves hunting, football, baseball, hiking, biking, anything that keeps him moving … except during baseball and football season when you will see him in front of the TV watching his favorite teams playing. Jenna is a very busy 19-year-old, who loves playing tennis, softball, and soccer. She is in college and very active with her school activities,;, she has a lot of friends, and she likes spending a lot of her free time with them. She is very sweet and loves to take care of others. Birna works at Vantage Oncology (Radio Therapy Clinic of GA) and works as a medical assistant. This is a job that she always wanted to do; she loves to help people so her job is the best way to give care to people who need it. Birna is described as a very caring person, very compassionate, a hard worker, clean, and very patient, honest and respectful. Coworkers and friends think she is a good friend, with a sweet personality and a big heart. She is also a strong person, very determined, and has a lot of passion for everything she does. She loves sports and plays tennis every time she has free time. We have a dog named Carlie; she is an adorable Papillion who is red/white poppy colored. She is about 3 years old, sweet and playful. She is a little shy with strangers but when she warms up she will be all over you. She is definitely a lap dog, she loves to curl up and sleep in the bed, especially when we are watching TV.

About Our Family

We are the Burleson Family from Buford, GA! We are waiting for a special child to welcome into our life, home and hearts. We are mature, happy and in very good place in life. We are willing and ready to share our life with children and can’t wait to be parents! We are looking to adopt 1 or 2 children, either gender, single child or siblings, from the ages of 0-10 years old with mild to moderate disabilities. We are open to most ethnicities, including Hispanic or Native American. Our family is based on love and respect for each other, building a family together, and maintaining a healthy marriage. We recognize how important it is to stay open and listen to each other. We are not perfect and don’t always want the same things at each moment, but if we listen to each other we can better understand how to meet in the middle. Even when we are upset, we value communication, trust, transparency, and honor each other’s feelings and needs. We believe in discipline but as a teaching tool without going to the extreme. We want to create a good base with rules and structure, being at the same time flexible for our kids to grow to be genuine and care about people. We want them to be free to make their own decisions and express themselves in a positive manner. These are the values that we hope to pass on to our child/children.

Our Life

We have a regular, stable life during the week. Todd works out of town currently and comes home for the weekends so we make sure to spend quality time together when he is at home,. We love doing things outside especially when the weather is nice and warm. We enjoy taking long walks at the park with our dog, Carlie; she loves to stop and say hi to every dog that is willing to stop to meet her. Todd is an avid hunter, so in November when the hunting season starts he is ready to go out into the woods. He loves to be outdoors; a lot of time he just goes out to admire the wildlife. One of Birna’s passions is helping others. On weekends, when she has free time she helps an elderly friend who is70 years old and doesn’t have any family and who lives alone. When needed, Birna takes her to do grocery and other shopping for the week. Most weekends, we have a plan or something going on, anything to keep the family busy and together. We love holding family barbeques and think there is nothing better than grilling up good food and sharing it with friends and family by the swimming pool. It is very important for us to recharge and take vacation at least once a year. Most of the time we go to the beach somewhere. This is something that we look forward to every year. We also love to celebrate and enjoy the holidays. Our favorites are Halloween and Christmas and we thoroughly decorate the house for each occasion. We enjoy all the seasons, there is always something fun to do in each one. We look forward to sharing these experiences with children!

Motivation to Adopt

We have always wanted a big family. Adopting will complete our family and has been a dream that hopefully will come true very soon. One of the reasons we want to adopt is because we have been unable to have biological children. Birna has always felt that maternal instinct inside of her and always dreamed being a mother one day. We want to build a loving home that our kids will want to come back to with a genuine feeling of comfort once they are adults. A home where they know that someone in this world has their back, no matter what. And more importantly a home where their momma lives. We are looking to expand our family and also make a difference in a child’s life. We have lots of love to give and we are ready to share our home with that special child who wants to be part of this busy and adventurous family.

Our home and Neighborhoods

Our home is in a safe, quiet and pleasant neighborhood with a lot of children living in the area. Most of the houses are ranch style. Our house is a single home with 3 bedrooms and a bonus room upstairs, 3 bathrooms in total, 2 living rooms, 1 dining room, a kitchen, garage for 2 cars and a beautiful in-ground swimming pool with a fence around it in the back yard, so our kids will definitely take swimming lessons. There are multiple schools within walking distance from our house. Our schools have been rated over 8, 9 and 10. We have several urgent care facilities within few miles, and the children’s hospital is located just about 20 minutes from our house. We have several options for summer camp where the children spend the day learning new games and interacting with other children.

Experience and support

We have experience as a biological parent (Todd), and step parent (Birna), and as foster parents. We have experience parenting together when Jenna was younger and spent half her time with us, and also as foster parents. We have experience parenting different children with different behaviors and histories – some with challenging behaviors and many with trauma histories. After a child leaves our home, it is never a good-bye We still keep in communication with our former foster kids and their families. We want to make sure they have a positive experience while they are living with us, and also to support them after they leave us in whatever ways we can. There is one young man that is very special to us and who we still see and spend time with regularly. He is a 7 year old boy that we were hoping to adopt. He was able to reconnect with biological family, ultimately going to live with his grandparents. We supported this transition and we are fortunate to have a a great ongoing relationship with his family; they have allowed us to continue to be part of his family and to provide support to him and to them. We have always done our best and we have done a great job of gauging the needs of every child and putting resources into place to maximize each child’s developmental and adjustment, no matter what their needs or prior experiences were. All of our extended family and friends support our decision to adopt and are willing to help if necessary – forming a loving network of support around us. We have a completed home study since 2011. We recognize the importance of learning and education and make sure we stay updated on our yearly required hours of training. Some of the trainings include: • Parenting abused and neglected children • Hispanic family dynamics • Teaching essential life skills to children of all ages • Self-esteem and our children-who do they think they are? • Parenting on the same channel • How to get the kids to talk about their feelings • Behavior and attachment disorders • Creating a healing environment for our children • Effective listening and communications skills • Pets and children • CPR/AED/First-Aid Certificate.
