Family Description
We are a loving, fun, and laid-back couple. We have three precious dogs, and we live in a growing community in Oregon. We are so excited to welcome a child into our home and to share our life with them. Kiara is a dental assistant and Josh is a self-employed mail carrier. We like to have alot of fun on the weekends hiking, swimming, floating the river, and going on adventures. We love to travel and we are excited to share this with our child.
Preference Description
We are looking to adopt a child, male or female, between the ages of 4 and 16 years old, of any ethnic background. We are willing to accept minor medical conditions, but no serious or permanent disability.
The Verrinder Family Profile
A single child, aged 4-16 would be an ideal match for our family. We are open to opening our family to a child with minor to moderate issues. We do not have a racial preference and are open to accepting a child from any background. We plan on honoring the child's heritage and race by immersing ourselves in their culture to learn more and expose our child to other people within their culture. We plan on honoring previous connections and relationships by keeping in contact via mail/telephone calls, and if appropriate, scheduled visits.
Introduction
Our hobbies include, swimming, hiking, kayaking, camping, traveling, floating the river, and crafting. Every weekend morning, we wake up and have breakfast together, do daily chores, sometimes we head to the local farmers market. We usually plan an activity every weekend that we can do outside of the home. We also enjoy taking our dogs for walks around the neighborhood when it is nice outside. We both enjoy gardening both inside and outside.
Home and Community
We have a beautiful three bedroom, two bathroom open concept home. We like to create a relaxing safe space in our home. We live in a quiet neighborhood but there are many children that live in our neighborhood that are outside playing and riding bikes often. We have a park nearby our house and the schools in the area are excellent learning centers. Our neighboring town offers many childrens activities such as trampoline parks, fun centers, ice skating, bowling, summer camps, and after school programs.
Parenting Experience
We are going to be first time parents with this adoption. We have younger cousins and young nieces and nephews that we adore and love doing things with. We have benefitted from foundations trainings from DHS as well as reading many parenting books along this journey, our favorites are; the connected child, In On It, and Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control. I have also taking a class on trauma informed care.
Support
Our parents plan on supporting us with advice, babysitting, and emotional support. We plan on getting support at a family counselor at Weeks Family Medicine, Josh and I have already started family counseling. We have support groups in central Oregon on facebook that offer/trade respite care and is a safe place to ask questions and get advice on situations in the home. We also have a stabilization center that is down the street from our house that is open 24/7 us our our child need a safe space to cool down or to talk to therapists.
Motivation to Adopt
We have been wanting to adopt a child for a long time. We are aware of challenges that we will face. Although we are first time parents, we are equipping ourselves with knowledge and strategies of how to help our child cope with trauma, how to parent, how to create a safe space for our child to talk about their past and where they came from. We are fully committed to make this family work and we are excited and ready to welcome a child into our home.
